Description:
The Campsite is situated on the banks of the river Bourne, in a marvellous natural landscape near the village of Choranche, at the foot of the Presles Mountains. It is an ideal location for active campers or nature lovers. The GOUFFRE DE LA CROIX is your base for an active or a peaceful holiday.
Children can bathe safely in the river. The river and the surrounding mountains offer attractive walks on well-marked paths, and also spectacular climbs. Not far from the camp-site you can visit several caves with marvellous stalactites and stalagmites, unique in Europe, and visit splendid wild gorges.
If on the other hand, you are looking for natural peace and quiet, this site is particularly suitable. Large pitches can be found in the shade of mature trees close to the babbling river, or in sunnier spots in terraces, with views of the mountains, cliffs, and gorges.
The "Gouffre de la Croix" camp-site is located in the Vercors Natural Park. The Vercors is a green and wild area whose valleys are carved by torrents and streams; it provides holiday makers with caves and cascades, deep gorges and daring cliff roads, footpaths and rock faces…
The camp-site is in the South-West Alps. From the exit of the camp-site, going west in the direction of St. Marcellin, you head towards the flatter valley of the Rhone. In the easterly direction towards Villard-de-Lans, you drive along the spectacular Gorges of the Bourne. Villard-of-Lans is a winter ski station, with a cable car which will take you up to an altitude of 2000 metres. Located between the plains and mountains, our camp-site enables you to indulge in numerous sports.
In the Vercors you can easily alternate active holidays with cultural visits. Indeed many museums and curiosities are worthy of your attention: the Museum of Water, the museum of the Resistance, an excursion on the La Mure Mountain Railway, a boat trip on the river Isere, the Petrified Gardens, the Museum of liqueur…
For the children: Miripili, the Wonderful World of the Imps, Robinson's Adventure Park, Walibi…
On the sporting level also you have a large choice: walks, cycle rides, climbing, VTT, caving, horsemanship, abseiling, canyoning, via ferrata and via corda, golf, paragliding, bungy jumping ….
Vercors is a superb area for walking. The possibilities are innumerable with splendid sights of steep Gorges, Combes, rocks and green valleys. Three "Grandes Randonnées" cross the area, the GR91, the GR93 and the GR95. The official walks in the Vercors are particularly well sign-posted.
The River Bourne has first class fishing, with fresh and clear water. Wild trout can be caught. In our camp-site you can fly-fish, and the rapids are particularly good for this.
The camp-site is just opposite the famous cliffs of Presles. These well preserved cliffs face south, so it is possible to climb there very early in the season. There are more than 300 climbs, some of almost 330 meters, in categories from 4b to 9b. From the Camp-site you have a splendid view of the cliffs, so on the day before, you can view from a distance the course which you will take the following day!
For the cave lover, the Vercors offers a large number of caves which are among most beautiful in France, and of which several are near the camp-site: the Caves of Bournillon, the Cave of Gallic, the Cave of Gournier…
5 km from the camp-site is the town of Pont-en-Royans, famous for its medieval "suspended houses" overlooking the river. You can easily get there on foot or on bicycle. There are two small supermarkets, a butcher, bakers, the tourist office, numerous cafes and restaurants, and a sports shop which organises excursions and gives courses in several activities.
20 km from Choranche, you will find the larger town of St Marcellin (famous for its an excellent pungent local soft cheese), with a whole series of shops and stores, including a Leclerc hypermarket.
Further away from the camp-site, there are many other interesting cities and villages, including Romans, the "city of shoes", Valence and Grenoble.
Opposite the camp-site are the Caves of Choranche, whose splendid transparent stalactites are unique in Europe. The brook which winds through the caves feeds an underground lake. From the camp-site you can go by foot to the caves by an attractive route, approximately a one hour walk. In the car you will be there in 10 minutes.
The camp-site is also the starting point of several pretty tours by bicycle, in the car or on motor bike. Best known are the Bourne Gorges, the Grands Goulets, the Petits Goulets, Combe Laval, the Route des Ecouges….
In the reception of our camp-site you will find a great choice of tourist leaflets for the area.
